Justin Bieber received a speeding ticket at 10:45 a.m. PDT on July 6, 2012, for driving his Fisker Karma sports car more than 80 miles per hour (about 130 kph) in a 65 mph (about 105 kph) zone on Los Angeles 101 Freeway.
Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine was one of up to 10 citizens who called the police. Zine, a Los Angeles police officer for 33 years (including 18 years as an LAPD motor cop), confirmed that Justin Bieber was trying to evade evade a paparazzo photographer and estimated Justin Bieber was driving faster than 100 mph.
Any time you do 90, the paparazzi are going to go 90, Zine stated. He was going from the fast lane to the slow lane to the shoulder in traffic. It was a very dangerous driving situation. I figured someone was going to crash, so I called 911. This was very bizarre, very outrageous, and showed a total disregard for life and property. The way [Bieber] was driving was totally reckless. I would have arrested him if I had pulled him over. I wouldnt have given him a ticket and let him go.
The paparazzo photographer initially evaded authorities, but the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was able to identify the man through his license plates.
The Los Angeles city attorneys office is considering a California Highway Patrol (CHP) recommendation that the paparazzo photographer be charged under Californias 2012 anti-paparazzi law. This would be the first case under the new law. If found guilty, the paparazzo could be sentenced to up to a year in jail.
Justin Bieber received the $100,000 2012 Fisker Karma electric sports car as an 18th birthday gift from his manager, Scooter Braun, and Usher, on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
