Tickets from the canceled 1979 Who concert in Rhode Island are be good for the February 2013 concert.
The Who’s 1979 concert in Providence, Rhode Island, was canceled by then Mayor Buddy Cianci, following the death of 11 fans during a stampede for open seating in Cincinnati, Ohio. Arena concerts in the U.S. are no longer general admisssion (fans can sit anywhere on a first come, first serve basis). The WHo has not played in Providence since.
General Manager Lawrence Lepore of the Dunkin Donuts Center (the same arena, under a new name) announced on WPRO-AM that the 2012 concert will honor any tickets from the 1979 concert.
While many ticketholders received refunds long ago, others have kept the tickets as memorabilia.
“Somewhere, someplace, someone’s got it stashed,” Lepore stated. “The question is, are they willing to give that up? If they are, we’re willing to take it.”
The highest priced ticket from the 1979 show was $14. Tickets for the 2012 concert range from $57.50 to $127.50.
Any 1979 tickets redeemed will be donated to help raise money of the Special Olympics of Rhode island.
