The song was released for digital download on March 13, 2012. “Addicted to You” was announced as the fifth single from the album on March 14, 2012 via Shakira’s official website. On March 13, 2012 a radio version was released for digital download. On May 2, 2012 the music video was released on Shakira’s VEVO channel on YouTube. The music video was directed by Anthony Mandler, and is the only video from the Sale el Sol era that wasn’t directed by Jaume de Laiguana.

The song was written and produced by Shakira, Luis Fernando Ochoa, El Cata, and John Hill. The song is a latin pop song influenced heavily with merengue and dance music. The song was noted for trying “to incorporate bilingual lyrics, a very 70’s chorus and Copacabana sounds.” Carlos Macias from Terra Networks wrote that “it’s a weird combination of Miami Sound Machine and Waka Waka Shakira.”

Music video

    On March 28, 2012 it was revealed by Shakira’s official fan site that a casting call was sent to fans and models of Hispanic origin to be in Shakira’s music video for Addicted to You. The music video was filmed March 29, 2012 on a ranch in Valencia, California and was directed by Anthony Mandler. A teaser of the video was released on April 30 on Shakira’s official channel on Youtube and the video premiered on May 2.
