Prepositions are one of the nine parts of speech in the English language.
A preposition is a word used before a noun (or words or phrases acting like a noun) to show relationship.
Examples of prepositions include: to, from, before, after, over, under.
Single Word Prepositions: abaft, aboard, about, above, absent, across, after, against, along, alongside, amid, amidst, among, amongst, around, as, aside, aslant, astride, at, athwart, atop, as, bar, barring, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, besides, between, beyond, but (normally a conjunction, as a preposition it means except), by, circa, concerning, considering, despite, down, during, except, excepting, excluding, failing, following, for, from, in, including, inside, into, less, like, mid (used poetically), minus, near, next, notwithstanding, of, off, on, onto, opposite, out, outside, over, past, pending, per, plus, regarding, respecting, round, save, saving, since, than, through, throughout, till, times, to, toward, towards, under, underneath, unlike, until, up, upon, versus, via, wanting, with, within, without, worth.
A compund preposition is a pronoun that consists of two or more words. Compound prepositions
Two Word Prepositions: according to, across from, ahead of, all over, along with, apart from, as for, aside from, as of, as to, away from, because of, close by, close to, contrary to, depending on, due to, except for, far from, forward of, in between, in to (normally contracted as into), inside of (inside out is an adjective, not a preposition), instead of, irrespective of, near to, next to, on board, on to (normally contracted as onto), opposite to, other than, out from, out of, outside of, owing to, prepatory to, prior to, pursuant to, regardless of, save for, similar to, subsequent to, thanks to, together with, up to, up until.
Three Word Prepositions: as far as, as well as, by dint of, by means of, by way of, close to, in accordance with, in addition to, in back of, in case of, in favor of, in front of, in lieu of, in place of, in regard to, in spite of, in view of, on account of, on behalf of, on top of, with regard to, with respect to.
Four Word Prepositions: by the time of.
Archaic Prepositions: anent, behither, betwixt, unto.
Loan Word Prepositions: anti, circa, cum, in lieu of, pro, qua, re, sans, versus, vis-à-vis.
Preposition-like modifiers of quanitifed noun phrases: apart from, but, except, plus, save.
Postpositions: ago, apart, aside, away, hence, notwithstanding, on, through, withal.
